REVIEW – Love Rarely – Pain Travels

Vicki had a listen to Love Rarely’s debut album Pain Travels. See what she thought!

Last month, Love Rarely released their debut album, Pain Travels.

Love Rarely a new alternative band from Yorkshire, and they released their very first album Pain Travels on April 10. They describe themselves as having an intricate math guitar style, mixed with powerful choruses to create a blend of genres.

Pain Travels contains 12 tracks and clearly expresses that sound to me. It is evident that a lot of care has gone into writing the songs and perfecting them. Frontwoman, Courtney, does well to portray her hurt through screaming choruses, while also giving us soft verses.

Will introduces the sound of the album well. It’s one of the lighter tracks that mixes alternative music with and an ethereal atmosphere, brought to you by the math rock guitar style.

The songs on the album vary in length and sound and yet are similar enough to blend in well together and feel in-place.

I’ll Try is one of my favourite tracks. The instrumentation is part of its appeal, making it one of the best examples of the genre experimenting that the band aims for. Haunted follows this well with co-operative vocals, and a middle-section that puts the guitar in the spotlight. The album then takes a heavier turn but softens again at the end with Through Families. I don’t know if this was on purpose, but I think it’s a nice way to wrap up, and loops around to the beginning well.

There are a couple of sections that I feel could be revised, mainly to prevent some songs sounding too similar. It is an almost perfect album, though, and one that I would imagine sounds incredible live. I will also be keeping an eye on the band and keeping up with future releases.

Love Rarely are doing a festival run over the summer, playing 2000 Trees, Quiet Steps, Truck Festival, and Burn It Down.
