Alternative Rock Music GENRE ARCHIVES

Welcome to AltCorners' Alternative Rock Music Archive!

Alternative Rock Music (also called alternative music, alt-rock Music or simply alternative) is an umbrella term used to describe a style of music that emerged in the late 80’s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Alternative Rock is usually characterised by bands who have a “do-it-yourself” or non-conformist attitude; hence “alternative”.

It originated with pop guitar bands like The Cure, R.E.M. and Pearl Jam. Alternative Rock gained popularity with bands like Nirvana.

A few Popular Bands defined as ‘Alternative Rock’:

Ben Folds Five, Alien Ant Farm, Bowling for Soup,Dave Matthews Band and Less Than Jake

Album Review: Gold Key – Panic Machine

Hertfordshire quartet, Gold Key have released 'Panic Machine' their follow up to 2017 debut “Hello, Phantom”. Panic Machine was recorded off grid in isolation at Gwynedd in North Wales. The crew created in the summer of 2016 by vocalist Steve Sears and Laurent Barnard two old school friends, Sears also produced two of Barnards, Gallows records. Both decided to make Gold Key adding James Leach on bass of Sikth and Milk Teeth’s Jack Kenny on drums.

Coast To Coast ‘Sovereign’ EP review

It would be dishonest to say I've been a fan of Coast To Coast, but I have been aware of the band for some time. Having turned down the chance to review their 2018 EP 'The World Doesn't Work', I hadn't given them much of a thought until new EP 'Sovereign' landed in my inbox.

The Homeless Gospel Choir ‘This Land Is Your Landfill’ album review

While I appreciate the sentiment in 'This Land Is Your Landfill', the new full length from The Homeless Gospel Choir, there's very little musical value in these thirty four minutes.

Haggard Cat – Common Sense Holiday

The phoenix rising from the ashes of Heck, Haggard Cat appeared on the scene two years ago with their debut record Challenger. Although having left the crazed hardcore behind, their energy levels have not dipped; Haggard Cat are purveyors of high octane rock n’ roll and their new album Common Sense Holiday is 45 minutes of raucous fun.

Imonolith – State of Being

Canada, oh Canada….you provided us with a group of metal powerhouses who came together to become… Imonolith. Featuring members from Devin Townsend Project, Threat Signal, Methods of Mayhem are about to release their debut record ‘State of Being on 27th March. If it’s not enough for you lot, then these heavy hitters are heading out to the UK in March/April.

The Jacques – Born Sore

How long has January been? Feels longer than 31 days, so, calm those nerves and ready yourself for February, as we here at Alt-Corner have been passed the new EP Born Sore by Bristol/London fellows, The Jacques and it’s out NOW.

Dashboard Confessional ‘The Best Ones Of The Best Ones’

Dashboard Confessional has returned to the world with a greatest hits package celebrating 20 years of sad-boy music-making prowess.

Bones UK – Unplugged

London Bred, L.A based Bones UK are coming at us with their Unplugged EP of five tracks taken from their self-titled debut album, Bones UK are Rosie Bones and Carmen Vandenburg, the duo have had a Grammy nomination for “Pretty Waste”, they also are releasing a performance film alongside this EP and have toured with Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Tom Morello, The Struts and Bush and this Unplugged EP was influenced by none other than Nirvana.

Halestorm, In This Moment and New Years Day @ Motorpoint Arena Nottingham

To see Halestorm announcing a UK arena tour just a year after playing much smaller venues was a shock, and it meant they’d for sure have to be bringing some heavy hitters with them. These came in the form of In This Moment and New Years Day, who have both commanded a mass following for many years, but also bring something much different to the table both musically and in the performance of said music.

Album Review: Bellevue Days – It Can’t Possibly Go Wrong Ever

Croydon rockers "Bellevue Days" released their long-awaited debut album, It Can't Possibly Go Wrong Ever on the 22nd November 2019, just in time for Christmas.

The Fever 333 @ Leeds University Stylus

Fever 333 live at Leeds University Stylus was an interesting night, that's for sure. The decision to not have an opening act left a vacuum of time between doors and the band taking the stage, as the sold-out room slowly filled. There was a distinct goodness in the air, however. I'd got myself on a sort of balcony, overlooking the ground below that I knew would later become a massive pit.

Issues – ‘Beautiful Oblivion’

Issues haven't completely shed the skin that is metalcore on new record 'Beautiful Oblivion', but they've certainly moisturised it with some extra glossy melodies that make the record more accessible to people outside of the scene

Gender Roles – Prang

In 2018, the month of September, day 28th  approximately 6pm, upstairs at the Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, Mare street, I witnessed a three piece band from Brighton called Gender Roles, these musicians consist of drummer Jordan Lilford, guitarist/vocalist Tom Bennett and bassist Jared Tomkins who all met/formed in 2015 at Jordan’s Brighton Pride party. In this thirty-minute set, they aided my tinnitus and enabled the love of music. A year later these punk/garage rockers release their debut record PRANG, it’s here in my grasps and is ready for release on August 30th via Big Scary Monsters. Recorded with producer Ian Sadler at Emeline Studios in Kent over ten days.

Junior ‘Beautiful Life’ album review

Junior have spent two years writing 'Beautiful Life', recording it across three studios, with the simple goal of pushing out the boat both with their own sound, and with the messages they can get out in their songs. They work long and then work hard, and it's safe to say that they've proved they're not just another pop punk band.
