On May 22, Scorpio Fever was released, exploring a darker side to Dirt Flirt.
Dirt Flirt’s 5-track EP explores the extreme infatuation that comes with falling in love, and the process of releasing the emotional rollercoaster of a secret, intense relationship becoming honest. The story is told with a synth-pop, disco sound with emo lyrics. To some extent, reminding me of more recent 5 Seconds of Summer songs, in particularly their solo sounds. Though, it comes with an essence of Julia Michaels and Molly Kate Kestner.
The EP begins with don’t tell anyone, which introduces us to the theme of obsession and a high energy beat. The energy seems to drop with each track, noticeable at focus on u, but honest finishes with a big boost of tempo, which allows you to feel the release that comes with honesty. The enlightened feeling continues through to high horse, where the EP ends.
As a concept, I really enjoy it, and I think the music really does tell the story. Being an EP, it just about gets away with the songs feeling quite similar, especially as the songs are fairly concise. If the themes were to continue into an album, I would want a bit more range in rhythms and instrumentation. As I said though, as an EP, it works well.
