Female fronted metal bands are rather cool aren’t they? They’ve been around for as long as metal has been a thing, but the modern day seems to be bringing a metric shit-tonne of incredible new ladies to the front of the heavier, chuggier side of music, with the likes of Butcher Babies and New Years Day being prime examples to prove our case!

Once Human just so happen to be one of those bands, with their new album ‘Evolution‘ giving a masterclass in the right way to do heavy! It’s slow, it’s brooding, it’s bursting with that sense of impending doom that your average Daily Mail reader feels upon seeing somebody with black hair and a Slayer t-shirt.

Eyes Of Chaos‘ kicks off the pulled back pacing, chugging its way through a riff-laden blast beat soup, whilst the groovalicious bass-heavy smashes on ‘Drain‘ make for a sinister, yet strangely funky experience that’s fun for all the family (*disclaimer, it may not be fun for all families*) before cascading into more familiar territory.

Paragon‘ and ‘Dark Matter‘ are also particularly notable moments on the album, almost breaking into the sonic territory of older Slipknot records, but somehow sounding even more hardcore than Corey Taylor and the gang. Perhaps it’s the total disregard of any polish in exchange for raw, ballsy aggression and fire? We think so!

To summarise, this is an album for those who like their metal heavy and not f***ing about in it’s delivery and do you know what?

We rather like it!

8/10
