Cope – Tooth & Nail

Friday the 13th is infamously known for bad luck around the world, but for fans of London band Cope, their new release of Tooth & Nail will be anything but bad news.

Starting off short and sweet is Stray Bullets, a wicked introduction to the album to get listners pumped up on what’s to come next.

Tooth & Nail have a pretty different take on its sound and lyrics put together. While the guitar riffs, drums, vocals and the overall metal sound comes off angry and bitter, the lyrics are quite a different story. For example, the lines “Do your best and do it well”. It’s not that all heavy metal lyrics are angry, but it’s rare to find happier lyrics in contrast to the sound. It’s a cool combination, nonetheless.

Neo Nasty is another track with the same kind of positivity as Tooth & Nail though with a slight difference, this time the message being forgetting about our bias and ignorance. It’s certainly what the world needs, after all.

Populism is just a brisk, rapid and total floor-filler track. Perfect for headbanging.

Now on the last track, The Great Divide concludes the album with an awesome mix of screaming vocals (using both high and low), brilliant lyrics in the chorus (especially “stepping into the unknown, these lights are burnt by black), and who could go wrong with a guitar solo?

Friday the 13th may not be so unlucky after all, especially those who look forward to the release of Tooth & Nail. It’s not all doom and gloom after all.
