Story Untold are set to release their debut album Waves on 2nd February. Story Untold are described as pop punk, but are more for fans of As It Is and bands of that ilk rather than Blink 182 or even Fall Out Boy. The quintet’s debut album is monotonous and instantly forgettable. And with Warped Tour hanging up its boots after this year it’s hard to see any sort of platform for Story Untold to be successful.

From the opening track In Or Out to closing track Chasing Feelings, the album seems to disappear into the background. On a couple of occasions the album peaks interest. Second track, the horribly named The 3ND, has an Offspring-esque opening. It was perhaps wishful thinking to hope for a song even as good as Offspring at their worst on this album. As The 3ND (this isn’t even the worst song title on the album) like all songs becomes generic, monotonous and basic without flinching. While it’s hard to pick any sort of highlight on this album, California and Matches In The Ocean suggest the slightest semblance songwriting ability.

For bands such as Story Untold (pop groups with guitars), to peak any sort of interest, they require clever, well written vocal melodies. That is something this album lacks. Each melody has is basic and sounds just like every other group of this style. Further to this the determination to ensure that every line rhymes, is bizarre and adds nothing to the songs.

Fortunately The Story Untold are five years too late to a scene that has already died. Waves is a forgettable album and I would be surprised if the quintet get any sort of success off the back of it.
