WREX will release their EP This Hell Goes a Long Way Down on August 16.
Take a Walk kicks off by building in intensity and I love how quickly it hooks you in. The electro-tinged opening lyrics work well before the stunning dual vocals from Mae Seaton and George Donoghue come in.
I also love the variety in lyrical delivery, with some almost hip hop style vocals in the opening verse and the angst from George with the line “there’s blood on your hands”. Mae shows off a varied vocal range and leaves nothing on the table. It’s such a strong opening track, with a great mix of electronica and rock.
Heaven’s Gate is a song I absolutely love. With a great bassline and punchy drums working well with the riffs and synths, topped off with Mae and George’s harmonies and deliveries that switch up styles, it has been put together extremely well. The hook lyric “we opened heavens gate and found hell on the other side” is absolutely fantastic too.
The lyrics in title track This Hell Goes a Long Way Down are extremely on the nose and relatable and I love the ending bass sound.
Shallow switches things up with a heartfelt ballad-style track. Lyrically it speaks on how we’re digging shallow graves as people are craving limelight, whilst only living when it feels right. There are some cool distorted vocals. I’m really glad that this track has the basic stripped back instrumentation instead of the intense and upbeat sound in the rest of the EP as it allows the deep lyrics to shine through.
I have to say, I am particularly in love with Mae’s vocal range, from soft, stunning high notes to melodic soaring melodies and rapid-fire delivery, she brings it all to the table. George’s punk-tinged delivery compliments this really well. WREX have found the perfect formula for dual vocals here – and they have mastered the often difficult transition between changing tempos and deliveries during songs, something I’ve seen many try but few succeed.
Every single track on This Hell Goes a Long Way Down is fantastic. They’re put together so well, WREX have done a fantastic job here. Each song has its own stand out sound but all tie together well so nothing feels out of place.
If you want something new to listen to, I highly recommend WREX and This Hell Goes a Long Way Down. I’ve definitely found a new favourite band.
