REVIEW: Terminals – Baptise

Terminals released their debut EP Baptise earlier this month. Lizi Birt took a listen to it.

Terminals started July by releasing their debut EP Baptise.

The alt-rockers kick it off with a nice build into Smile, incorporating more intensity as each instrument comes in. It’s very shoegazey and at times reminds me of early Allusondrugs (now Allusinlove). It’s one you can just put on in the background and still enjoy just as much as if you paid full attention. It’s a well-crafted song with hypnotic vocals.

The rhythm section does well in Depths to literally add depth under James Whitehouse’s harmonies.

Rise is a short instrumental piece that is calming and is something that sounds really good.

Closing with the titular track, we see a heavier sound brought in to open Baptise but this is stripped back as the vocals kick in before being brought back, although when it comes back, it does drown out the vocals a bit and it gives me the impression of shouting into the void. I think this is the track I prefer most on the EP.

The five-track EP isn’t personally what I would go out of my way to listen to but I wouldn’t say I didn’t enjoy it.

The alternative rock infused with shoegaze sound is an interesting combination and it works well, but it’s just not really the type of sound I tend to go for. I enjoy the ambience that the EP brings.
