REVIEW – Evergrey – Architects of a New Weave

Lizi had a listen to Evergrey’s new album Architects of a New Weave and thought the drum fills were the standout moment.

Evergrey released new album Architects of a New Weave on June 5 through Napalm Records.

It’s a strong album that I feel will be really good live.

The album begins with a haunting speech through slightly distorted vocals over a calm melody. It sets a scene for shaping the world.

The first actual track is The Shadow Self and it’s a good pit starter with the opening riffs. The synths under the vocals are good and the lyrics in the chorus are really good, talking about the shadow self and how to make him part of yourself. Some standout lines include “In shadows cast by our fleeting desires

We chase a light that the world concealsTruth is bound in our hearts’ quiet fires

Its silent voices what truly heals.”

The drum fills are the standout moment though.

The lyrics for The World is on Fire are really deep, asking some very open questions.

Mikael Stanne is the only guest on the record, and he lends his skills to A Burning Flame. it starts with some great instrumentation, particularly in the guitars, and the dual vocals work well, asking questions like “do you ever feel alive enough to change life to something new?

The vocals throughout the album are great, vocalist Tom S. Englund has a wide vocal range and uses it all throughout the album, from the more classic rock-esque in the titular track to the higher pitch in The Shadow Self, there’s not a range that he can’t do.

The guitar work throughout the album is great too, with plenty of chances for Stephen Platt to riff off.

It’s a very atmospheric record, with synths really adding to the sound in the right places, and some cracking bass and drum combinations.
