Countless Goodbyes will release their new album Lost in Waves on October 25 through Prime Collective.
The band waste no time in kicking into opened Unrivaled. It’s in your face and heavy and I love it. The synths over the chorus add a nice contrast to the sheer barrage of heavy drums, the riffs and bass as well as screams. The synths can be seen dotted throughout the album too and it adds a nice touch as it’s not overpowering or out of place when they’re used.
The album is a wall of brutal sound almost from start to finish with just a brief pause between songs to catch your breath. Although there are some more melodic elements in songs, for example, Paralyzed begins with an acoustic guitar before kicking into a heavier song
Lyrically, the album is focused on the depths of humanity and how everyone possesses inner strength and resilience, despite the challenges we may face. This is shown in Unrivaled with the line ‘I am my own God’.
One of the standout songs for me was Pages and Chapters. Lyrically it’s fantastic with lines such as ‘if I could live again, if I could change my origin, all I need is relief and more things to believe’. It also features some smooth clean vocals, the gritty screams seen throughout the album, but also some guttural growls.
Musically, the album is full of great drum fills and the bass lines are fab – specifically in Death Stood Before God. There is some really good guitar work throughout too, especially in the opening of Come Alive, but the drums and bass definitely stand out for me.
I would like to see more smooth clean vocals in future Countless Goodbye albums because they are absolutely stunning and I love the choral sounds in some of the tracks. Some of the best clean vocals are seen in the aforementioned Pages and Chapters, Hollow and Room Without Walls. Closer Lost in Waves also has stunning clean vocals and some really deep lyrics, including the opening lines “would you give your life for a stranger if someone wants to die would you pay that price, would it give you a meaning, does your conscience need cleaning, would they do the same to you.”
With some work on the album being done by Bad Omens’ Joakim Karlsson (post production) and the choirs arranged by Kat Marsh and Choir Noir who have worked with Bring Me The Horizon, While She Sleeps and Architects, on top of the band themselves, it’s no surprise that the album is absolutely fantastic. Every song on Lost in Waves is one that you cannot get enough of.
