Managing to capture the angst and protest spirit of punk rock and blend it with hooks and melody more akin to the indie rock and power pop of the 90’s, Empty Lungs have an energy and determination second to none. Then again, when you grow up in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the tail end of a bitter and divisive 35-year conflict, grit and determination to create something positive and unique are instilled in you.

This determination has seen Empty Lungs become the first European artist to sign with Canadian based label Hidden Pony Records. Their ‘Don’t Get It’ EP is planned for release on March 10th, 2017.

‘Don’t Get It’ starts off with trashy drums and grunge guitars. From explaining the punk rock and blend of indie rock, this band live up to expectations. Classic old school vocals in there too with shouting blending in as harmonies. This song sounds like it should feature in a British 90’s film.

‘Losing it. Finding it’ kicks off with vocals that sound influenced from bands such as The Vaccines. Nice, catchy drums that gets your head bobbing along clashing against the soft sound of the rhythm guitar.

‘Fragile’ being the song to close this single starts off with a pure punk rhythm guitar that almost sounds distorted, classic! From the vibe of this track, I sense “Teenage Kicks” by The Undertones. Jumping straight in is lead guitar giving a sound and feel to the track. Vocals are so soft and old school that indie rock is the perfect term to describe this band.

I could see this band play in small, underground venues or pubs and pulling in a crowd that could sell the venue out. With gig go-ers merry and singing along, this band have great things coming to them.

8/10.

Kirsty Johnston

March 1, 2017

My name is Kirsty Johnston and I come from a Village called Bothwell. I have a such a tickle for Pop-punk and my favourite band is Neck Deep. I attend New College Lanarkshire studying music business in the hope to worm my way into the industry setting up live events. I am not afraid to spit out my honest opinion but I love everyone.
