The Cruel Knives formed following the demise of Heavens Basement with Sid Glover and Rob Ellershaw teaming up again after the split and joining forces with Tom Harris and Al Junior. They’ve played shows with The Pretty Reckless and have now revealed debut EP Side One.
Opening track The World We Were Sold begins with a solid riff and has a catchy melody along with a signature rock riff. A rock track that makes you want to get up and dance is a good start for the EP. During Itch’s first verse, you can really hear the vocal talent of Tom Harris.
Lead single Kill The Messenger has a demure beginning which picks up. While it isn’t the catchiest track on the EP, it has a sing-a-long chorus that could be huge and go down well live. There’s an old-school rock feel to Squeeze’s intro and the harmonies work well together. Closer The Promised Land rounds the EP off with a dirty undertone offset with contrasting vocals. It’s another that makes you want to get up and dance.
Overall this is a pretty solid effort for The Cruel Knives’ debut and I look forward to hearing more.
