Coldbones are a four-piece band from the UK’s South East coast, hey release debut album Where It All Began on 6 April. The album tells the story of a butterfly’s life, with each track representing a key moment in its journey.

Very interesting concept which starts with Caspases the start of the transformation process within the cocoon, the band combine elements of prog, shoegaze, metal and atmospheric sounds. Where It All Began continues the foray into the experience of music showing the changing degree of a butterfly. This section grabbed me with a wonderful heavy guitar riff that outshone the gentleness of this instrumental gathering.

Flowing through New Heights of the butterfly, ending with To Whatever End a darkness of death is the destination and the speed of the final tune is breath-taking. This record is an interesting idea, the melodic harmony envelopes emotions such as a cocoon would a butterfly, it allows the feeling of freedom in panic.

Coldbones have created a fresh take on nature, and David Attenborough’s voice isn’t heard once. The idea works and manages to enter a foray into showing birth, through to living, and ending in death.

Bill Hicks once said we pay for life with death, so everything inbetween should be free.

The guys are on tour in 2018
