Bristol alternative trio Beyond Recall have been winning the hearts of fans and media alike with their down to earth attitude, professionalism and not to mention fresh blend of rock, hip-hop and massive melodies (if you think of Twenty One Pilots but about 10000000x better, you may be on the scale of these guys!) January 13, 2017, sees the trio release their latest EP Selfish Scars and this is what I thought of it…
140 Characters (anyone else immediately think of Twitter? I did!) sets the record off with a bang with a great opening riff. Title track Selfish Scars shows off frontman Zaid Elgahmi’s vocals and is very catchy. Almost begins with a phone answer message and has more of Zaid’s rap vocals. This is a track that has been played live by the band for a while (and sounded great each time), now hearing the recorded version, it is incredible. There is a very catchy chorus featuring the lyrics ‘over and over again’, which is when you’ll be singing this. Tomorrow is actually quite heart breaking, with a theme of never letting people’s opinions get to you. It is a must-listen on this record! The closing track is an alternate version of Almost. At the beginning, it reminds me of an acoustic Blazin Squad (one of my childhood favourite bands!), it has an acoustic feel which in turn showcases the vocal abilities more than the original and is a great way to end the record.
There are great riffs throughout from guitarist Chris Hewitt and Zaid’s vocals are great across the record, as are Chris and Josh’s backing vocals. All the tracks will transfer over well live. This is a strong record from the trio.
