This Friday, Area 11 will be releasing their latest album Modern Synthesis, and being able to listen to a couple of the tracks, it’s definitely going to be worth the wait.
The first track I listened to was Watchmaker, which began with a techno styled introduction (kind of like something you’d hear on a video game), before a few bass chords and drums are introduced. It’s pretty cool, but is replaced by guitars and the rest of the instrumentals for the chorus. It returns again for the next verse though and the shift between both styles is smooth and fits well. I always like when a bit of electronic or techno is mixed with rock, and this track does that very well. Also, there’s an instrumental part of the song that is orchestral, so we’re getting a very good mix here.
Next, we have Verses, which is slightly different to Watchmaker, as it doesn’t have as much techno (though it’s still there a little bit), and this time, there’s a few screaming lines. It’s good to learn that the lead vocalist can scream as well as sing well, so that’s always good. Also, my favourite lines would have to be “Little soldier, little girl who used to love this fucking world”.
And finally, we have Contract. It’s fast-paced, loud and a good listen overall. It’s definitely something I can picture playing at live venue with bright stage lights. I’d say it’s pretty atmospheric.
Overall, Modern Synthesis is a little different to what I’m used to hearing, but to me, that’s always a good thing (I was especially impressed by the mixed sounds of Watchmaker). Anyway, I’m sure once it’s released on Friday, fans of Area 11 will feel that this has been worth the wait.
