Limitless is the third studio album from Tonight Alive and with this they have brought a mixed bag of songs over a multitude of genres.
This album breaks new ground for the band and in some ways is a gamble into the unknown, with pop sounds coming in form of Oxygen, Human Interaction and Waves. Heavier drums and guitars from alt-rock style songs; To Be Free and I Defy. The infectious and catchy pop-rock of Drive works wonders and for old school Tonight Alive fans, How Does It Feel drops back to their much loved pop punk sound. There is even an early Taylor Swift country vibe running through Power Of One.
The song that stands out on this album is Oxygen. It doesn’t really fit. With no real sense of guitar to provide a punch this song doesn’t have any impact, especially being followed on the album by the chillingly good Human Interaction. It sort of fades out of focus. I feel this song would have benefited if it was stripped back to a pure acoustic track. This would have showcase the great range of Jenna’s vocal talent.
Given that this album is a mix of many genres it will have something for everyone but, with the switches in genre the album has the feel of a mix tape. Undeniably, a great collection of songs but seemingly without any real connection between them, almost lacking an overall theme.
This is an album that new fans will love as it is a fantastic entry point for newcomers but, old fans will have to put it on repeat to get used to this new sound. Returning fans should listen to Be Free and How Does it Feel to ease themselves into this album. New fans should go for Drive and Waves.
