It’s time to get to know Elessar frontman Ricky Powell! We set Ricky 10 questions about his musical likes, his guilty pleasures and what music means to him.
How would you describe your taste in music?
Amazing, of course?! Although most of it is pure cheese, I love it! But I’ll listen to anything really.. I’m just a sucker for those 00’s jams!
Who do you consider to be your favourite band and why?
That’s a difficult one! I was a massive Tom Delonge fan growing up, so I guess Blink 182/Angels & Airwaves will always be my ‘go to’ bands.. but right now in the moment, I can’t get enough of Don Broco! They’re just so damn catchy.
Who is the best live band you’ve ever seen?
Watching Enter Shikari at this years Slam Dunk was life changing. I was so lost in the occasion! But over all, it has to be Foo Fighters headlining Reading a few years back. That set was mind blowing, I was surrounded by all my friends singing ‘Best of You‘ at the top of my lungs!
What is the one song that you could listen to forever?
Jimmy Eat World – The Middle. That is a song I could never get sick of! Drunk or sober, as soon as it comes on I’ll be belting it out.
What album, if any, was a turning point in your ‘musical life’ and why?
The self-titled Blink album. Hands down! It’s was an absolute masterpiece when it came out. It was so different and fresh! It was around that time I really wanted to be in a band too, so it made me pick up my guitar again!
In 3 words, what makes a good album or song?
Riffs, For, Days’! Haha i joke.. it’s hard to use only 3 words, but you need Passion, Honesty and Energy! If you make a record, you need to believe in it, tell a story, and let other people relate to it!
A festival or a gig? Why?
Love a good festival! All day drinking with your mates in the field.. yes please! Also you get a wider range of bands and more music for your money.
Who would be your 3 dream festival headliners?
Enter Shikari, Blink 182 (old line up) & probably Foo‘s again!
Who are the best new band you’ve discovered lately that everyone should know about?
Local lads Polary! we’ve played shows with them before and I saw them in Cheltenham a few weeks ago. They’re well worth a listen! Or SAINTE (previously Tay Jardine from WATIC) her new music is killer!
What band or artist is your secret, or not so secret, guilty pleasure?
Little Mix are the one. They’ve got banger after banger coming out! I’d love to say it was a secret, but I’ve been seen shamefully dancing in a club once. Ah well.. Girl power!
