It’s time to get to know AKA George! We set George 10 questions about his musical likes, tastes and guilty pleasures…
How would you describe your taste in music?
A lot of pop music these days is about the individual.. My favourite music always points towards a time or place. I think the “where” and the “when” are so much more interesting than the “who”. I like songs that are evocative and that put an image in my mind. I always write pop songs. They may have elements of rock/electronic, but something that’s always constant through everything I write is that the subject matter has to be big and make you feel something.
Who do you consider to be your favourite band and why?
The Killers. I’ve been listening to them a lot lately. I’m doing When You Were Young at my October 4th gig, it is an incredible song. Sam’s Town is one of the best albums ever, I wish they’d go back to Vegas with Flood and make another like that.
Who is the best live band you’ve ever seen?
Watch The Throne (Jay Z and Kanye) was a great show. The atmosphere was so intense- I’d never really felt that in hip hop before. It reminded me more of a rock gig.
What is the one song that you could listen to forever?
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Going back to songs painting a time and a place, this one really hits hard. The story is so sad. She’s trying her best, nothing’s going right and she’s planning to run away. It’s a small glimmer of hope against a history of wrong turns.. And it still isn’t enough. She’ll never leave. Amazing song
What album, if any, was a turning point in your ‘musical life’ and why?
I think it must have been a Red Hot Chili Peppers album – probably By The Way, because it made me want to learn to songs on every instrument. I bought a bass with Christmas money and learned the tabs on guitar. I also started getting good at drums around that time.
In 3 words, what makes a good album or song?
“Feels like me”
A festival or a gig? Why?
A gig, because everyone is there for you. There’s more room for deep cuts and interesting moments
Who would be your dream 3 festival headliners?
Foo Fighters
Skrillex
Kanye
Who are the best new band you’ve discovered lately that everyone should know about?
A girl called FABIA. I’ve been listening to her on walks down to a lake near my house. Check her out
What band or artist is your secret, or not so secret, guilty pleasure?
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures! My playlist currently includes that new Fergie song with Rick Ross, bit of Example, DJ Khaled, as well as Massive Attack and Bjork, the “cool” ones. (Newsflash: cool doesn’t exist anymore.)
