Ahead of the release of debut album Modern Bollotics (Rude Records) on May 12, Brit alt-rockers Youth Killed It have been teasing fans with cracking videos for singles Popstar and (Jean-Claude) Van Mann. We asked frontman Jack Murphy and guitarist Carlos Montero to take our A-Z challenge:
A song that made you want to make music?
Carlos: Crosstown Traffic – Jimi Hendrix
Jack: The Coral – Dreaming Of You
Best rider you’ve ever had?
Carlos: I don’t care as long as there’s hummus and breadsticks
Jack: Once we got given a note to say not to touch the rider as it wasn’t for us and if we did they would not be happy.
Craziest moment you’ve experienced in the band?
Carlos: Probably Jack thinking a radio presenter said badgers when really she said badges and he went on a 10 minute rant about badgers on live radio.
Jack: Had to be playing our EP release show in London hearing people shout out songs and sing the lyrics back, was mental, never thought anyone would care like that, we started this for fun and to see people getting that involved in so rewarding.
Deepest lyric one of your songs features?
Carlos: “Bad decisions when I was a teenager” – We’ve all been there!
Easiest song you wrote?
Carlos: We do a mean cover of Wonderwall if that counts?
Jack: Molly – the song literally wrote itself, from each instrument, wrote it in about 30 minutes.
Favourite song in your set?
Jack: Jean-Claude Van Mann
Carlos: FUDGE has to be my favourite, get to play a cool guitar solo
Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?
Carlos: John Frusciante, all day every day.
Jack: Mike Skinner
Hardest thing about being in a band?
Carlos: It’s like looking after your kids, but im sure they feel exactly the same.
Jack: Being in a band with a Chelsea FC Fan
Interesting fact about one of your members?
Carlos: Big Ben was named after our drummer
Jack: Our drummer is a Clock, commonly referred to as Big Ben
Jokes you have in the band?
Carlos: We mostly just have pet names for each other, collectively we’re known as Dirty Murph N’ The Boys.
Jack: What jokes? We are the most serious band in the world mate.
Key to writing a song?
Carlos: Get Matt Healy to produce it apparently.
Jack: Cigarettes and dad jokes.
Longest distance you’ve traveled to play a show?
Carlos: Like 2 hours on the train I think
Jack: At the Moment 3 hours, hopefully that will increase soon haha
Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?
Carlos: Santana front row, I cried.
Jack: Anyone in the band Foals.
New band you’d recommend?
Carlos: PUP, Pinegrove, Hiatus Kaiyote, Big Spring, Tirade
Jack: Spring King are cool!
Opening for this band would be ideal?
Carlos: ELO or nothing for me.
Jack: Slaves UK would be the one!
Place you’d most like to tour?
Carlos: Japan then America
Jack: Australia
Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?
Carlos: If you don’t ask, you don’t get!
Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?
Carlos: Modern Bollotics comes from the stupidity in growing up and leaving all the fun shit behind to fit that mould, cliche, I know.
See us live at?
Carlos: Twin Wild support show in Norwich on the 1st of March!
The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?
Carlos: Nah, music is definitely better than ever, live shows have taken a bit of a hit but music is always getting better.
Jack: No. Music is constantly evolving and there is great music from all over the board from any genre/generation/era.
Unusual merchandise?
Carlos: Pretty sure Eminem used to sell branded urinal cakes?
Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?
Carlos: Would love to do a funk version of our set, that could be pretty funny!
What do your fans mean to you?
Jack: We want to drink a brew with all of them, maybe we should get a kettle for the stage.
Carlos: Everything of course, they are the engine that drives this machine
X-rays or any other treatment needed for band related injuries?
Carlos: We do keep saying Jack should get his head checked, check back later.
You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?
Carlos: Definitely Taylor, sometimes I forget he’s even in the band!
Zoo animal that best describes your band?
Carlos: I don’t believe in Zoo’s so i’ll say we’re like wild stallions galloping across the desert
