WREX take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of WREX to tell us about themselves!

In today’s A-Z challenge, we learn all about WREX who are celebrating the release of new single Consume!

A song that made you want to make music?

Mae: For me that was My Immortal (Evanescence) – I grew up learning piano and I wanted to be Amy Lee so badly!

George: Dumpweed (Blink182). It was the opening track to one of the first records I ever got my hands on and I remember jumping around to it in my garage playing a tennis racket thinking I’d love to be able to play guitar.

Best rider you’ve had?

Face Down (Scala) for the sheer amount of crisps provided – none of us were drinking but boy did we eat those crisps.

Craziest moment you’ve had in the band?

Our drummer, Greg, cracked his head open when we supported The Hunna, meaning he played the whole show with an open head wound. That’s metal AF.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

Ironically, our deepest lyric is probably in the song Shallow;

“Take your time, you’re only human, open your mind, you can get through this,

Paralysed by synthetic happiness, cut the cord take a swim in the abyss,

We’re conditioned to feel, never knowing what is real, but are we living?”

Easiest song you wrote?

This Hell Goes A Long Way Down happened really quick. It was written on a 15 minute lunch break at work – it wasn’t initially for WREX as it felt so different to our sound at the time, but ended up shaping our whole last record.

Favourite song in your set?

Heaven’s Gate – it’s got the soft singalong, the edm elements and the big bouncy riffs.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

James Blunt – We’re relying on you people of the internet! Do your thing!

Hardest thing about being in a band?

The load ins and malnutrition. In hindsight crisps is not a well balanced diet. Send fruit and veg pls.

For real though, managing a full time job around a touring schedule is pretty tough. Getting to bed at 3am and being back online at 9am just straight up sucks.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

Mae trained for several months trying to break the world record for most crickets eaten in a minute. Who knows, maybe 2026 will be the year.

Jokes you have in the band?

George’s inability to play Brown Eyed Girl on guitar. The boy can riff but just don’t ask him to play that specific song.

Key to writing a song?

Don’t overthink it and trust your instincts of what you enjoy. Once it’s finished, overthink everything, ever. Spiral for a bit and then eventually once it’s out in the world you will enjoy it again.

Longest distance you’ve traveled to play a show?

426 Miles – Brighton to Wanlockhead (Scotland’s highest village) for Wildfire Festival… for now… Ask us again in November 😉

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Papa Roach – we both went to see them last year at Wembley. The connection they had with the audience in a venue that big was inspiring. Every single one of them are fantastic musicians and a masterclass in how it’s done.

New band you’d recommend?

Native James – I saw him live a few years back and was blown away. Great music, great guy!

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Skunk Anansie – I had the opportunity to photograph them when they last played Brighton. They are a band that stands up for what they believe in, and puts on a great show.

Place you’d most like to tour?

I’d love to tour East Asia, it’s an area of the world we’ve never been able to go to individually or as a band. Touring is a great opportunity to see some amazing places and it would be nice to see something other than the M1 and a Travelodge.

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

Consume is all about the state of the world. The divide between people is bigger than ever, or at least it feels that way. I feel like I’m either bombarded with division and the darkness of the world or advertised more things I don’t need.

Either way we consume to numb or to feel.

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

I think there are loads of amazing things about music nowadays that we overlook. Never before has it been so accessible for people to create and share their music and art with one another. That is liberating to me, the playing field is leveled a little more between artists with the tools available.

However never before has there been such a quantitative analytical measurement on music. And this takes away from the art somewhat. If you find an artist and they have loads of followers or streams ‘are they new or just to you?’ If they have too little, does it even get the time of day?

That can be hard to balance. There’s a lot more pressure on instant and fast success rather than the careers of old that we idolise and romanticize.

Unusual merchandise?

Beans, yes that’s right. We have the collab you’ve all been waiting for WREX X HEINZ, come get ‘em whilst they’re tinned.

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

If someone could get Purple Disco Machine to do a disco house version of heavens gate that would be rad.

What do your fans mean to you?

WREX has always been a space where we can let go, 2 people writing songs to disconnect and ultimately reconnect at the same time. What’s been awesome is over the last 12 months seeing that space become more than ours. A space that other people feel comfortable to step into and share with one another. That means the world to us.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

Yes, George sprained his ankle in October loading off of stage, a good few hours in A&E to get the good news that it wasn’t broken.. We already mentioned Greg’s head wound.
And as for Mae, she’s got a clean record but was taking backflip lessons for a while.

So once again ask us next time. I’m yet to see her land one…….

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

The M25’s, it’s a cruel demon. In all seriousness we are about as bad as each other due to the AuDHD, so we’re either REALLY early, or REALLY late. For example George overplanned every aspect of our Icebreaker 2025 performance so intensely, but the curse of dyslexia meant he misread the stage time and got us there 6 hours early.

Zoo animal that next describes the personality of your band?

The penguins from Madagascar (the movie), we’re kind of weird and always plotting something.
