One Fall take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of One Fall to tell us about themselves.

In today’s A-Z challenge, we have One Fall telling us all about themselves!

A song that made you want to make music?

For this band, “The Horse” by A Wilhelm Scream. But in general, back in the day, “Suspect Device” by Stiff Little Fingers.

Best rider you’ve had?

We are a super low maintenance band. Our rider would be, like, water and protein bars. And some kind of horrifying gas station snacks for Darren.

Craziest moment you’ve had in the band?

Honestly just getting to play festivals alongside some of our favorite bands. We never get used to it and we always pause to appreciate it.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

Oof, that’s tough for ME to say. I’m proud of the lyrics to Rats Abandon Ship and it means a lot when it resonates with folks.

Easiest song you wrote?

Shoot Straight basically shot out of us.

Favourite song in your set?

Rage/Quit by a mile. It’s super hard to play, which is fun to us.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

Phill would say Frank Turner. Helen would say James Rundle of Something Bitter.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

STAYING UP LATE. We’re the worst at it. All shows should be matinees.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

Three of us are video game developers.

Jokes you have in the band?

We definitely have inside jokes, mostly about show behaviors that we consider high crimes, like breaking down drum kits onstage or bands that don’t stay for the whole show.

Key to writing a song?

For us, it seems to be “take something simple and make it needlessly complicated for ourselves so that it’s unnecessarily difficult to play while no one listening notices these decisions.”

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show?

We traveled to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico in January, and we are doing a run in the UK this summer!Unbelievably pumped for that and fingers crossed that folks come out to see us.

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Nathan Gray and Becky Fontaine of the Iron Roses.

New band you’d recommend?

The Promised End from our hometown of Salem, MA.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Blood Command.

Place you’d most like to tour?

Europe in general, especially places we haven’t been yet, like Helsinki.

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

“Hi, it’s Helen. Thank you for reading this. What kind of cake is good where you live? Can I have some cake?”

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

Our most recent EP is called “Spine First!” We’re huge pro wrestling fans, and it’s a thing that commentators sometimes shout during matches. It felt right.

See us live at?

If you’re in the UK, we’ll be coming around with our pals in OH THE HUMANITY! June 28-July 6! We’ll be playing in Oxford, London, Reading, Nottingham, Bradford, Birmingham, and Brighton!

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

Nah, we like it all. Plus DARKO didn’t exist in “the old days.”

Unusual merchandise?

We actually try to sell unusual merch! We sell a lot of hats, but also sell onesies for folks with babies.

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

What do your fans mean to you?

They give us so much support. They make it possible for us to do what we love. It is an amazing feeling to have your songs, energy, and lyrics connect with people you don’t know.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

No X-rays but constant minor injuries. We usually have blisters or bleeding fingers from playing too hard. And we are BIG on stretching before shows.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

If it’s due to having to take pee breaks on the road, definitely Darren or Helen.

Zoo animal that next describes the personality of your band?

Something very gentle but brave. Maybe a capybara.
