Marionette take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of Marionette to tell us about themselves!

In today’s A-Z challenge, we asked Marionette to tell us about themselves.

A song that made you want to make music?

Jack: I would say I Want You So Bad (She’s So Heavy) by The Beatles.

Best rider you’ve had?

Will: They’ve not been too crazy so far, though the Heineken in Clwb was pretty good!

Craziest moment you’ve experienced in the band?

Jack: When we recorded three songs in two days in the summer it got pretty crazy, or at least pretty stressful!

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

Will: Thinking through them, I’d say one of the deeper ones is “The skys so dark I can’t tell where the water ends and the heavens begin” from Our Place – a live favourite.

Easiest song you wrote?

Will: Easiest song I’ve written for the band is probably Your Hand, I think about 90% of it came together in an afternoon.

Favourite song in your set?

Jack: Fav song on set is Dancing.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

Jack: Josh Homme.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

Jack: Hardest part is working alongside doing gigs as it can be very fatiguing.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

Jack: Me and Adam have our birthdays in the same week!

Jokes you have in the band?

Will: Adam’s quite quick with some really funny wordplay! Biggest joke currently though is cube vinyls.

Key to writing a song?

Will: I’d say think about structure. It’s fine having a really cool intro riff or a chorus melody but if you can’t connect them then you haven’t got a song! Lyrics wise I think just write down as many cool lines as you can all the time, then when you sit down to write you’ve got a good reserve and sometimes it can help you decide what to write about too!

Longest distance you’ve traveled to play a show?

Jack: Cwrw in Carmarthen, a fair drive from Cardiff!

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Jack: One of my best friends from college called Jamie. He’s an awesome songwriter.

New band you’d recommend?

Will: They aren’t really new but Baby Schillaci are amazing! And I’ve had the album they’ve just released on repeat all week!!

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Will: If Catfish stay together I’d love to open for them, they were a real big influence on me when I was in my early teens and it’d be a proper dream come true.

Place you’d most like to tour?

Jack: I would love to tour in America!

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

Will: Something Do Amazing. Had it on my bedroom door all through uni, think it meant a different thing to me every day but it’s stuck with me.

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

Will: Your Hand is kind of the big lyric in the song, it comes up a few times throughout the song and he spends most of the song thinking about their hand so it seemed fitting!

See us live at?

See us live at The Moon (Cardiff) and in Cwrw (Carmarthen) both in November!

The old days of music were better than the current. Do you agree?

Jack: Yes I agree the old days were better as more genres would be popular at the same time.

Will: I would say that even though the top 10 now is mainly the same genre of music, you do get a much wider variety of music by smaller artist because making music is so much more accessible now.

Unusual merchandise?

Will: We haven’t actually got any merch yet (working on it!) but we have been workshopping some cube-shaped vinyls – still got some R&D to do though!

Variations you’d like to do of any of your songs?

Will: We haven’t tried any acoustic versions of our songs yet, I think that could work with some of them.

What do your fans mean to you?

Jack: Anyone who’s listened or watched us live means a lot to us all as a band.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band-related injuries?

Jack: No X-rays needed just insulin and glucose for myself 😅

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Will: Probably mine for not reading the advance properly!

Zoo animal that best resembles the personality of your band?

That’s a hard one! Maybe a monkey cause they’re fun to watch!?
