Lunarian take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of Lunarian to tell us all about themselves!

A song that made you want to make music?

Rivelino: If I had to pick one, I’d pick Katon Bagaskara – Negeri di Awan. I listened to it a lot of times back in elementary school, and even though I had not tried to play music, I felt there was something in it that is unusual, sort of idiosyncratic in away.

Best rider you’ve had?

Nothing has come as far as to be called crazy. We had been served alcohol in the past where if you live in Indonesia, that’s pretty cool.

Craziest moment you’ve had in the band?

Can’t forget this one: one night in 2013 we were planning to meet at Rivelino’s place. Willy and Anink arrived first which is unusual, and we waited for Ekky for an hour or more. He arrived later with broken teeth and blood, he just had a traffic accident and fell head first. What’s crazy about it is after that he just took his motorbike and ride to Rivelino’s place like it was nothing. It was scary, we were panicking and asked him what happened, Ekky said “I fell” WHAT?! Can’t lie, we tended to him while laughing at his badassery.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

Rivelino: Noble Mind Traveler is one that has a very deep meaning to me, that lyric contains years of my personal journey. It’s not so hard to understand either unlike Generation on a Deadline and Moon Citizen.

Easiest song you wrote?

Rivelino: A Quarter Past Sorrow. Not because it’s the slowest song, but I remember the process was very flowy, the first draft was finished in one-go because it was so automatic.

Favourite song in your set?

Ekky: Noble Mind Traveler.

Willy: Proclamation: Phantoms

Anink: Xenophobia.

Rivelino: Moon Citizen.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

It would be great to have some Indonesian musicians that have influenced us, but for the life of me it’s really hard to pick one.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

The time management. We’d also say consistency but that is something that has become habitual after a while.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

Anink used to have no hair on his body before he got married, how weird is that.

Jokes you have in the band?

If you can make Ekky drink alcohol, he would go pray after that. No time interval, just directly go to pray.

Key to writing a song?

Acceptance and some rest in between. We think many musicians are a victim of the their own lack of these two traits in the beginning of their career.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show?

Not very far apparently, around 100 miles from Jakarta.

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Very inspiring, that would be Radiohead, no contest.

New band you’d recommend?

Can’t say whether these names are new or not, but some of us have been listening to Alt-J, Friska Viljor, and Pascal Pinon.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Wow… On the top of my head I think about names like Sigmunor some local punk bands..

Place you’d most like to tour?

Japan!

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

The famous quote from Confucius: “Every man has two lives, and the second starts when he realizes he has just one”.

You really have to think about it, though.

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

Happily announcing that we’ve just released an album called “Refined Anomalium” last June!

See us live at?

Star Kemang, South Jakarta on the 5th of August. We’ll be having a showcase for our album there.

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

Yes but only regarding how it was pushing you to look for good music, that’s of then buried beneath the majorly famous.

Unusual merchandise?

A ullieann pipes-shaped keychain as a memento of our song Proclamation: Phantoms,

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

It’s one of our dreams to collaborate with orchestra someday.

What do your fans mean to you?

A lot. We think at some point in your career where you’ve realized that you would have never gotten to where you are if not because of your fans, you have to start thinking about what they like as far as performances go, but definitely not about the music that you create.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

Nope, so far so good.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Over the years we’ve made it sure that such thing doesn’t happen. But in the past it was because of either Willy or Rivelino.

Zoo animal that next describes the personality of your band?

Rivelino: Owl.

Anink: Honey badger.

Willy: Kangaroo (but a cute one).

Ekky:  Dolphin.
