Chained Saint take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of Chained Saint to tell us all about themselves.

In today’s A-Z challenge, we asked Chained Saint to tell us all about themselves in 26 questions.

A song that made you want to make music?

Ethan Kahn: For me it all started with Jumping Jack Flash by the Stones, there has always been something about the older sound to me that makes me want to start creating.

Sebastian De Avila: One song that inspired me to pick up an instrument and start making music was For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica. The energy and attitude in the performance of the song from Day on the Green resonated with me and truly opened my mind to the idea of playing music.

Cameron Cottrell: The first song I listened too and I realized I wanna make music was In Bloom by Nirvana. Something the way the song just starts off right in your face. Turkey something special.

Best rider you have had?

Ethan: We will keep you posted on that one.

Craziest moment in the band?

Ethan: There hasn’t been many notable “crazy moments” with the band, however having to kick a member out of the band was definitely a bump in the road, but besides that we have been smooth sailing.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

N/A

Easiest song you wrote?

Ethan: A song on our forthcoming album titled “Neanderthal” is probably the easiest song we’ve written, being that we wrote the entire song in one practice session.

Sebastian: Our song “Neanderthal” for me was the easiest song to write since all of the riffs of the song were written pretty quickly in one practice session.

Cameron: Neanderthal is definitely our easiest song, we wrote the pretty quick during practice one day.

Favourite song in your set?

Sebastian: Stronger than Stone.

Ethan: Stronger than Stone.

Cameron: Stronger than Stone.

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

Sebastian: I think that either Sammy from Drain or Justice from Trapped Under Ice would sound sick on a track.

Ethan: Being a huge Drain fan having a feature by Sammy would probably be the puzzle piece to fulfilling my happiness as a musician.

Cameron: Max Cavalara would a dream feature on a record for sure.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

Ethan: I don’t find many parts about being in a band “hard” because to me I’m doing nothing more than creating music with my best friends.

Sebastian: For me the only thing that at first was challenging was trying to find practice times that would work for everyone but thankfully that’s not an issue anymore.

Cameron: The hardest about being in a band for me is carrying my gear place to place and taking equipment down and putting it back together.

Jokes you have in the band?

Ethan: We have a lot of inside jokes between the four of us whether it’s things like our Sal banner in my garage or funny working titles for new songs or ideas.

Key to writing a song?

Ethan: Collaboration is key for us. Every song we write is a collaborative effort to get the purest form of Chained Saint as a whole rather than one member.

Sebastian: I would say the key to writing a song for me is collaboration. Jamming together allows us to bounce musical ideas back and forth much easier and also it is much more exciting especially when someone comes up with a sick riff.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show?

Ethan: The longest we’ve traveled for a show so far was a gig roughly 40 miles away. That gig was also our first gig ever.

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Ethan: Personally, seeing Dream Theater recently was really inspiring as I grew up as a prog head idolizing John Petrucci and Alex Lifeson. Naturally, seeing a guitar legend playing every note perfect for a 2 hour set was extremely inspiring.

Sebastian: For me, going to LDB Fest in Louisville was very inspiring for me. The energy that all the bands had and the crowd participation for all the bands was honestly one of the sickest things ever and it inspired me to make music that also provokes that type of energy.

New band you’d recommend?

Ethan: I would absolutely recommend Guilt Trip, although they are a little older than some people would consider “new” they are definitely a super sick crossover band worth checking out.

Sebastian: People should definitely check out Volcano and their set from Sound and Fury 2023.

Cameron: New band I would definitely recommend checking out is Magnitude. They are sick.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Ethan: As a huge Drain fan, I would have to go with them.

Place you’d most like to tour?

Ethan: South America (specifically Brazil), I see and hear a lot of good things about the South American crowd as well as specifically the Brazilian metal crowd so I would totally want to experience what all the hype is about.

Sebastian: I would say Colombia because my whole family is from Colombia and it would be an absolute honor to perform there.

Quote that you’d like to pass on to our readers?

Ethan: If you’re not first you’re last – Ricky Bobby.

Reason for the title of your forthcoming release?

Ethan: It describes a series of events during the recording of our debut record.

Sebastian: The title represents all the unexpected events we had throughout the whole process of the creation of this record.

See us live at?

Ethan: We are in the midst of booking our next show, so stay tuned for an update on that soon.

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

Ethan: I totally agree, but the hardcore scene right now is super sick and I’m loving it.

Sebastian: I wouldn’t completely agree, obviously there were a lot of legendary bands from back in the day but right now there’s a bunch of sick bands making great music especially in the hardcore scene.

Cameron: I don’t know if I would say it’s better or worse but I do think with out the old there is no new.

Unusual merchandise?

Ethan: We have pretty basic merch at the moment but we plan on expanding and having a wider variety.

Variations you’d like to do on one of your songs?

N/A.

What do your fans mean to you?

Ethan: Fans mean alot to me, not in an egotistical way but rather in a way that makes me happy to see people appreciating the work put in by the band and I, and even better actually enjoying our music.

Sebastian: The fans mean a lot to me and I am grateful for anyone who is one. Someone listening to our music and enjoying it is one of the coolest things for us and is something we don’t take for granted.

X-rays or any other treatments needed for band injuries?

N/A.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Ethan: So far we haven’t really been late for a show, we like to be as early as possible to ensure we have proper time to set up and soundcheck. However in the case one of us is late, it’s probably me being the only one who can’t drive yet.

Zoo animal that best describes the personality of your band?

Ethan: Yellow Elephant.
