HOT TAKES: Getting to know MAVIS

Welcome to the feature; Hot Takes! We chat to a band or artist that we have unearthed as some what of a hidden gem and allow them the chance to introduce themselves to you, the reader.

Q1 – Who is in your band?

We are a four-piece formation from Germany consisting of vocalist Phil Donay (me), guitar player Manuel Weller, bass player Mo Amrein and drummer Jakob Schulz-Klein.

Q2 – What is your take on your own sound?

We call our music modern metalcore, but we’re trying to expand the borders of this genre with incorporating every influence that feels natural while writing songs. So, most of our songs combine some heavy aspects of metal with more pop driven influences, or even thelikes of reggaeton, country and EDM.

Q3 – If someone was listening to your music for the first time, what song would you tell them to listen to and why?

Depends on where they’re coming from, musically. Someone familiar with metal may listen to Calypso or Marcescence first, with those songs showcasing all our bands influences. For someone new to metal, Limerent or Monsters could be the perfect starting point.

Q4 – What is the plan for 2024?

We are really looking forward to touring and playing at festivals this year. We can’t wait to expand even more and to show everyone what we’re capable of on stage too. But we’re also locking ourselves up inside the studio this year to work on even more music again, as our current lineup is constantly cooking ideas. New music will be out sooner than you would think.

Q5 – What is the one song you wish you wrote?

The answer to this will probably change every other minute, as our creative process is all about soaking up every influence coming to mind while writing songs. That is probably why the style of our metalcore leans into so many genres. But an easier answer may be:every song I ever liked.

Q6 – What three bands inspired or continue to inspire you the most?

There is a magic about artists managing to constantly evolve while keeping their very own character. Some examples coming to mind are Bring Me The Horizon or earlier Architects. In a more dramatic and theatrical way Ghost would be another example.

Q7 – Where can our readers see you live or listen to your music?

We are currently in the planning stages of some tour dates throughout Germany and central Europe. Also, some German festival shows might be announced soon. Hopefully the next year will allow us to tour different countries as well.

To keep the waiting short, listeners can find us all over the known streaming platforms or could order our record on vinyl or CDthrough many different retailers.

Q8 – If your band was an animal, what would it be and why?

In my eyes a chameleon would be a good fit. We might get overlooked in the vast jungle of metalcore bands. But if you stumble over us in our disguise, you might get lost in the beauty of our shifting colours. This is the best description of our current state of being somewhere between a newcomer, an insider tip but also a proud artist with a fully fleshed out sound to claim its place in the scene.
