HOT TAKES: Getting to know Jack Valero

Welcome to the feature; Hot Takes! We chat to a band or artist that we have unearthed as some what of a hidden gem and allow them the chance to introduce themselves to you, the reader.

Q1 – who is in your band?

Well there’s me, front man/lead singer/rhythm guitar. Amie on backing vocals, Theo Williams on drums, Erik Litstrom on lead guitar and Max Cahill on bass.

Q2 – What is your take on your own sound?

Always a hard question to answer this as I feel it can be quite subjective, but my take on it is it’s hooky, big, classic with thoughtful lyrics.

Q3 – If someone was listening to your music for the first time, what song would you tell them to listen to and why?

I would say Temporary Helplessness, as I feel this one really gets across my vibe of poppy & hooky songs with somewhat serious or even dark lyrics. It’s a juxtaposition of dealing with panic attacks and pop guitar music and I love juxtapositions.

Q4 – What is the plan for 2023?

Coming up is a whole new EP with brand new tracks I’m really excited about and to get in the road as much as possible and do some great shows.

Q5 – What is one song you wish you wrote?

That would be ‘That Funny Feeling‘ by Bo Burnham. Slightly obscure as it’s actually from a well-known comedian instead of a touring musician, however it is so hauntingly beautiful and so encapsulates the feeling of fear and uncertainty around the middle of the pandemic when the world seemed like it was falling apart and unfortunately is still relevant today. The lyrics are so well crafted, picking up on such specific but totally recognisable details of modern life that usually don’t end up in songs.

Q6 – What three bands or artists inspire you the most?

I would say for sure Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as they were my idols growing up, DMAs as I love their energetic big guitar sound that want to replicate and finally David Bowie. Apart from the obvious he always represented to me the sense of being out of the norm and was in my opinion the ultimate showman.

Q7 – Where can our readers see you live or listen to your music?

We’re going on tour in October, gonna be hitting up Kazimier Stockroom – Liverpool on the 13th, Gullivers – Manchester on the 15th, McChuills – Glasgow on the 17th and Sidney & Matilda’s – Sheffield on the 20th. Keep on eye on my socials and website for more info and dates.

Q8 – What zoo animal represents the personality of your band?

Haha, interesting question. I’d say a Capybara, friendly and here for a good time.
