Hot Takes: Getting to know Defocus

Welcome to the feature; Hot Takes! We chat to a band or artist that we have unearthed as some what of a hidden gem and allow them the chance to introduce themselves to you, the reader.

Q1 – Who is in your band?

Simon (Vocals), Jeffrey (Guitar), Jonas (Drums) and Bambam (Bass)

Q2 – What is your take on your own sound?

Jeff: Our sound is pretty modern, rhythmic and aggressive with heavy vocals that make you want to headbang, but also leaves some space for a dark ambient atmosphere. If you like low-tuned guitar riffs in fast paced songs, you’ve come to the right place!

Q3 – If someone was listening to your music for the first time, what song would you tell them to listen to and why?

Jeff: I guess everyone in our band can agree that ‘Thought of a Vision’ definitely represents the sound and vibe of Defocus the best. It has everything we love, from fast riffs to soothing melodies. Simon especially shows what his vocal range is capable of in this song. Besides that, ‘Common Grave’ is also a song that would be a good recommendation, because the chorus goes right into your head and we strongly believe in the importance of the message that the song delivers.

Q4 – What is the plan for 2021?

Simon: 2021 is not only the year of the release of our debut album ‘In The Eye Of Death We Are All The Same’, but it will also be the year with our first shows in a looong long time. We hope to play with lots of cool bands and meet all you crazy people out there!

Q5 – What is the one song you wish you wrote?

Jeff: To be honest, I wish I wrote Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. I know some people get annoyed by it because they probably heard it a million times already on the internet, but come on, it’s the catchiest song of all time that always gets every one of us hyped and puts us in a good mood.

Q6 – What three bands inspired or continue to inspire you the most?

Simon: Answering this as a vocalist I have to say that the biggest inspiration to me was, and still is, Spencer Sotelo of Periphery, because of his crazy vocal range and the ability of using his voice in so many different ways. Seeing this keeps me motivated to work on my own skills and improve my very own sound every day. Another inspiration is definitely Corey Taylor, because he is one of those vocalists whose vocal range is kinda comparable to mine. As a third pick I’d choose Thornhill, because they guided me through the last few years and still do on a daily basis.

Q7 – Where can our readers see you live or listen to your music?

Jeff: Our music can be found on basically every music platform such as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube etc. You can also pre-order a physical copy of our album exclusively on impericon.com or bjb-merch.com. We are very thankful for the opportunity to play at this year’s Euroblast Festival in Cologne with bands like Humanity’s Last Breath and Jinjer, so shoutout to our team and the people from Euroblast for making it possible! As always, for more shows or tours, everybody’s invited to check out our Instagram page of course!

Q8 – If your band was an animal, what would it be and why?

Simon and Jeff: We’d probably be a cute dog that is always hungry for food and gets excited to meet new people really quick, but then sleeps all day.
