HOT TAKES: Getting to know Defences

Welcome to the feature; Hot Takes! We chat to a band or artist that we have unearthed as some what of a hidden gem and allow them the chance to introduce themselves to you, the reader.

Defences released their new album Shadowlight on November 8 and we asked the band to tell us more about themselves with our quick-fire Hot Takes!

Q1 – Who is in your band?

Cherry Duesbury – vocals, William Young keys & harsh vocals, Calum Wilmot – guitar, Kyle Parke – drums, Owen Hughes-Holland – bass.

Q2 – What is your take on your own sound?

We’d describe it as an atmospheric, almost horror themed poppy kind of nu-core. Hugely heavy at points but you can still sing along!

Q3 – If someone was listening to your music for the first time, what song would you tell them to listen to and why?

I think the first song I’d point them to is probably The Curse. It’s a perfect encapsulation of both the old and new eras of the band, with a ridiculously heavy riff but a fairly rocky chorus. It’s like an entry point for our entire discography!

Q4 – What is the plan for 2024?

Our new album “Shadowlight” comes out on the 8th November! After that we have a bunch of shows, including an album launch at Camden Assembly before heading back to Germany with our label mates in Rising Insane in Bremen, Dresden and Oberhausen. Finally, we’re finishing out the year in Brighton at Hammerdown Winter Militia.

Q5 – What is the one song you wish you wrote?

Chokehold by Sleep Token. It has one of the biggest earworm hooks I’ve ever heard, while perfectly setting up the main tones they struck on their amazing third record.

Q6 – What three bands inspired or continue to inspire you the most?

Sleep Token, Bring Me The Horizon, Spiritbox

Q7 – Where can our readers see you live or listen to your music?

Our music is available on all streaming platforms, just head to wherever you normally get your music! As for shows, as mentioned above we’re playing:

9.11.24 – Camden Assembly, London
29.11.24 – Drucklufthaus, Oberhausen
30.11.24 – Tower Musikclub, Bremen
1.12.24 – Blauer Salon – Dresden
7.12.24 – The Arch, Brighton (Hammerdown Winter Militia)
1.29.25 – Nice ’n’ Sleazy, Glasgow
1.30.25 – Xerox, Newcastle
1.31.25 – Lion’s Den, Manchester
1.2.25 – Billy Bootleggers, Nottingham
2.2.25 – Packhorse, Leeds
3.1.25 – Fuel, Cardiff

Q8 – If your band was an animal, what would it be and why?

A capybara, because they make friends with everyone!
