Behind the song: Lola Raie takes us behind U Make Me

We find out more about Lola Raie’s thoughts and inspiration for new single U Make Me!

Songs have a very personal meaning to those who write and perform them, but they also mean something to the listener who connects with them in their own way.

We love finding out more about various singles, including the inspiration taken from other artists, so here, Lola Raie takes us into her mind with the inspiration for single U Make Me.

On the track overall, Lola said: “This song was really born out of a breakup—one of those moments where you’re just overwhelmed with emotion: anger, sadness, confusion, and honestly, a little bit of ‘watch me now’ energy.

“I was heavily inspired by Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘Good 4 U’—I love how raw and explosive it is—and also Gwen Stefani‘s early solo stuff, which always had this edgy, unapologetic confidence. I wanted to capture that same intensity: the rage, the sarcasm, the heartbreak—but make it mine. It’s like a scream in pop-rock form, but also a bit of a release, hence the “You Fucking Suck” anthem.”

Here she takes us behind the four main inspirations:

Song #1: “Good 4 U” – Olivia Rodrigo

This song was really born out of a breakup—one of those moments where you’re just overwhelmed with emotion: anger, sadness, confusion, and honestly, a little bit of ‘watch me now’ energy. I was heavily inspired by Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘Good 4 U’—I love how raw and explosive it is.

Song #2: “Ex-Girlfriend” – No Doubt

Gwen Stefani and No Doubt really inspired the punk vibe which always had this edgy, unapologetic confidence. I wanted to capture that same intensity: the rage, the sarcasm, the heartbreak—but make it mine. It’s like a scream in pop-rock form, but also a bit of a release, hence the “You Fucking Suck” anthem.

Song #3: “Girlfriend” – Avril Lavigne

The punk/pop vibe has always been a favorite. I love the girl power and just saying what’s on your mind—but make it cute.

Song #4: “Hollaback Girl” – Gwen Stefani

That’s a killer vibe to channel — “Hollaback Girl” is all attitude, all defiance. My song has that same catchy energy, like the “B-A-N-A-N-A-S” moment.
