The Not So Perfect EP debut by a young teenager Johnnie Guilbert, who is currently on his 3rd year of touring America and Canada, has pleasantly surprised fans with an EP, with both deep emotional lyrical concepts and it’s simplistic acoustic, pop and emo themed songs. Reminiscent of a 2007 – 2009 alternative, myspace, singer song writer styling. The songs writing format is simple, creative and clever. Incorporating elements of ukuleles, simple guitar and percussion, showing Guilbert to be an all round diverse musician.
The first track I heard; the title track ‘Not So Perfect’, is an up beat, guitar and dynamic voice positive pop song. Very original, with sparks of blues influence teeming within this tune. Easy listening, relaxing with striking thoughtful lyrics “It’s Not So Perfect as it seems, when we were mean’t for bigger things, but giving up on love, was never good enough”. Allow yourself to be contained by this songs charming presence and the EP will be resonating with you for the entire listen.
Another track ‘Song Without A Name’, is a well composed up beat, hook filled, acoustic guitar song, it has a great hook in the chorus, one even if you aren’t a big fan of the whole EP, will most definitely be snuck in one’s head after a listen. It’s very pop guitar and easy rhyming “Who am I? I’m so shy, I just can’t seem to comply, to the words that you say, baby I’m not okay”. Trust me, this is a carefully crafted Pop Goldie.
