Ever wondered what your favourite artists think is the best song they’ve written? How about the meaning behind it? Well don’t fret because we at AltCorner have got you covered! Here Pagan‘s vocalist Nikki takes us behind the scenes on his favourite song!

What is your favourite song you’ve written?

Il Malocchio Si Chude (the evil eye closes) as it sums up the entire record’s meaning. The guitar parts in this track remind me of an 80’s power ballad, so of course it’s gonna be my favourite!

What inspired the song?

At the time of writing Blackwash, I was reading a lot about The Jonestown Massacre, as I have a fascination with cults and why someone would be inspired to join. Il Malocchio Si Chude looks at a cult leader who preys on vulnerable people who become dependent on him. The lyrics are symbolic of a person who is trapped in a toxic relationship. I found myself in a relationship that was incredibly unhealthy became convinced that if I ended the relationship, I would never find anyone else. I was made to feel worthless and became dependent on this person through their many forms of manipulation. Although I went through a very dark time, my pain inspired much of the songwriting on Blackwash.

What is it about the track that makes it so special to you?

When I recorded this song, I was physically and emotionally exhausted as it was the last of 10 songs that I had recorded in one day. I think this song is the most special to me as I pushed myself as far as I possibly could, so when I listen to it I have no doubts or regrets. I feel that the pain I was feeling at the time translates perfectly into the message that I was trying to convey.

I also love when an album with a clear beginning, middle and end and I feel this track is the perfect ending to Blackwash.
