Ever wondered what your favourite artists think is the best song they’ve written? How about the meaning behind it? Well don’t fret because we at AltCorner have got you covered! Here James Hall of Fine Creatures take us behind the scenes on his favourite song!
What is your favourite song you’ve written?
My favourite song that I’ve written is probably “Settle Down”. I wrote it with a friend a long time ago. It has a lot of personal meaning and relevance for me.
What inspired the song?
I was just discovering the Beatles, and the Doors at the time, I was really into slightly psychedelic lyrics and Jim Morrison’s dark and drunken way of singing.
Lyrically, it’s inspired by anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed by life but finding a release or a distraction from fear.
What is it about the track that makes it so special to you?
The song is special to me personally because at the time, I had just started properly writing songs and after writing this, I knew what type of direction I wanted to go in. I’ve never had so much fun writing or playing a song live. The song was a catalyst for my songwriting, and gave me the confidence to continue writing music. Lyrically it’s important to me because it’s all very personal, and is set at a certain time in my life where I was going through a lot of issues, and this song was one of the many things that got me through it. Writing this song helped me express what I needed to. To me it’s very conversational, mainly towards oneself.
