Youth In Revolt take on the A-Z challenge – 2023 edition

Our A-Z Challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there! Here it’s the turn of Kenny from Youth In Revolt to tell us all about the band!

Youth In Revolt are back with a new line up and incredible single 925! Find out all about the band here!

A song that made you want to make music?

Too many! But probably I’m Not Okay by MCR or Feeling This by blink 182.

Best rider you’ve had?

I love KitKats and Boston crème donuts 🥰

Craziest moment you’ve had in the band?

Once again, too many! But probably the moment we got the call for the offer to play Warped Tour!

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

That’s really hard, because each song has a different type of emotion. But one that came to me first is off of a song called “Weak” from our new album. It’s about my intrusive thoughts and overthinking when I’d be having a panic attack or anxiety. I would sometimes just sit in the bathroom by myself while having a breakdown and look into my own eyes, zone out, and my intrusive thoughts would take me on an absolute rollercoaster. It’s weird, I know – but just being honest!

“And I can’t try, to feel alive,

Crash my car right into your place,

speeding down town I guess it was fate.

And I can’t cry, if I survive,

smash my head right into the street,

laying on the ground, this is what I need.

When our eyes meet, you make me feel weak, but I cannot be this love I see

are you what I need, yeah?”

Easiest song you wrote?

Probably a song off the new album called “Forget You”, within a day of getting the instrumental from Emilio, we had come up with all the vocals and melodies.

Favourite song in your set?

Probably Onlyfans or So Over It

(I’m literally giving y’all soooooo much unreleased info, haha!)

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

Personally I’d love to have MGK! (what a surprise). The way his deeper voice contrasts with higher singers like my self gives me serotonin.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

Leaving your friends, family and animals when you go on tour. Missing birthdays, parties, holidays, events, all things you’d normally do with your family.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

I’m an absolute nerd, I love anime and video games. Currently watching Demon Slayer and playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4! My fav anime is Attack on Titan, fav game is BG3!

Jokes you have in the band?

Mc Muff Records and Mickey Mouse Management are some inside jokes that I will not explain – but a big joke everyone loves to play on me is that they know I hate the word booger or snot and they’ll proceed to snort really hard and do nasty stuff with their nose and they can make me throw up because of how disgusted I am from it 🙁 been dealing with it for almost 10 years now.

Key to writing a song?

Start with a chord progression + tempo, build the structure, add some vocal melodies and lyrics that you want to express and then once you’re satisfied with all that – go in and add all the bells and whistles (synths, fx, swells, etc) that enhance the song and don’t take away from the main focus of the track.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show?

Living in New Jersey and going straight to California! It’s a very long drive, haha!

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Too many, but the ones that keep me going are my own band members, Devon, Alex and Emilio. Whenever one of them brings a new instrumental, or riff, or melody, or anything – it always gets me excited and motivated! I love working with them so much, we all flow so well off another and things are so natural.

New band you’d recommend?

I haven’t really been listening to any new bands, I’m in a bit of a rut with finding new stuff that I like so I’ve been going back and listening to all old bands like Blink-182, BFMV, A7X, Linkin Park, Atreyu – all bands I listened to as a kid.

I know when Devon reads this he’s going to be like “you should’ve said LA SAD, they’re cool af and I know you liked them”.

So, LA SAD.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Would love to open for Blink, or MGK, or MCR, or The Used, or Waterparks or this band and that band and this band THERE’S TOO MANY, I CANT CHOOSE.

Place you’d most like to tour?

I’d love to tour in Europe, I’ve heard that they just appreciate music so much more than the US and go way harder at shows.

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

“Shit ain’t nothin’ to me man” – Dracula Flow 3

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

Who the hell wants to work a 9 to 5 job when you could be doing something you love?

See us live at?

TBA 🙂

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

Yeah, it had a lot more passion and impact. Now, music is pumped out so unbelievably fast and people get bored of it at the same rate.

Unusual merchandise?

We had one shirt that looked like the font and shape of the Heinz ketchup bottle 🤣 it was so dumb

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

I’d love to send vocal stems off of a song called “Give It Up” and have somebody make some EDM remix that’s super euphoric and vibey.

What do your fans mean to you?

Everything. Nothing more to say 🙂

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

Not me personally, but one time a trailer – yes, a trailer that you pull behind a van/bus, got dropped on Alex’s foot right at the start of a tour and it broke his entire nail, squashed his toe and it swelled up like 3 times it’s size and he could barely walk for like a month. And then a day or so later when the pain REALLY set in – I accidentally jumped on it when I got excited to tell everyone that there was cows we were driving by 😂. He just dealt with it for the whole tour + after he got home and never did anything about it and he’s perfectly fiiiiine.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Mine or Alex’s 100%. Either Alex was driving and went the wrong way, or I spent too long getting my makeup done 🥰

Zoo animal that next describes the personality of your band?

A capybara, I feel like we get along with everyone!
