Spectre Beneath take on the A-Z challenge

Our A-Z challenge is a fun way to get to know the many bands and artists out there. Here it’s the turn of Spectre Beneath to tell us all about themselves!

A song that made you want to make music?

Invaders by Iron Maiden

Best rider you’ve had?

Never had one.

Craziest moment you’ve had in the band?

A fight happening outside the venue in which a guy had his nose bitten off.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

And you die in my arms, a steady stream of broken dreams

We are finally together, my love.”

Easiest song you wrote?

Fragmented from our debut album, The Downfall of Judith King. It came together very easily.

Favourite song in your set?

The Plotting of Judith King

Guest you’d most like to feature on your record?

Anna Murphy from Cellar Darling.

Hardest thing about being in a band?

It used to be getting people to rehearsal, but these days? The social media side of things.

Interesting fact about one of your members?

Katy’s 9 year old daughter is in the U13s England’s Ice Hockey squad.

Jokes you have in the band?

The microphone stand always has to be raised for everyone else after I’ve done my backing vocals.

Key to writing a song?

Willing to let go of ideas for the greater good.

Longest distance you’ve travelled to play a show?

50 Miles.

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Devin Townsend.

New band you’d recommend?

Cellar Darling.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Helloween.

Place you’d most like to tour?

South America. The metal fans are so dedicated.

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

Artists unfortunately do not leave a coherent record of their achievements in life.”

Reason for the title of your recent/forthcoming release?

The Ashen Child is the nickname of Judith King when she was growing up. There are a couple of songs written about her on this release.

See us live at?

We’re not touring at the moment.

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

I agree. We have too much choice which on one hand is great but music becomes very throwaway as a consequence.

Unusual merchandise?

In my last band we had mouse mats. Are mouse mats still a thing?

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

For our latest release, The Ashen Child, we have a power house of a slow track, ‘As Far As The Eye Can See’, which comes across as a pseudo ballad. However, the original version of the song had a really heavy and rhythmical chugging section in it. I’d love to put that back in at some point, if I can persuade everyone else that is.

What do your fans mean to you?

Everything. I am still surprised people follow what we do. It’s something I’ll never take for granted.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

No, sorry.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Probably Katy’s, I don’t know how she juggles everything in her life.

Zoo animal that next describes the personality of your band?

The Clouded Leopard.
