Amongst Thieves Interview

The quintet recently released their second EP ‘March For The Sun’; the well crafted release saw the band take all the necessary steps to evolve their sound and cement themselves as one of the most promising metalcore acts in the UK. Brad had a chat with the band about the past 12 months, the reception of their latest EP and their next single.

Formed amidst the burning blazes of summer 2013, these York-based stalwarts have an intense but still hooky skill set that blends vengeful anthems and epic grandeur and crafty, atmospheric moments with giant soundscapes punctured by versatile vocal lines.

Hello Amongst Thieves! How have the past 12 months been for you?

It’s been pretty intense. We spent the first half of the year writing and recording “March For The Sun” and playing shows. As soon as that was released, we got straight back onto writing again for an album. It’s all systems go in camp AT right now.

You released “March For The Sun” a few months ago now, how was the recording process for that release?

Going into the studio is one of our favourite times as a band. We’re lucky to work with an amazing set of producers (Joe and Sam Graves, Innersound Studios) who bring a lot to the table. When we go in with our songs, they bring a fresh pair of ears and add so much.

How has the reception been to the new songs?

It’s been overwhelming. We’ve got a pretty heavy presence on social media, so we get a lot of messages from fans telling us what they think about the new material. It’s great to see what songs are really resonating with our fans.

Now I hear you are working on a new music video – what song is the video for and what can we expect from the video?

The next single is for “101”. It’s a fairly heavy song so you can expect a lot of angry faces and scissor kicks.

If you could tour with any band who would it be?

There’s so many bands out there that would be amazing to tour with, but for me personally (Josh) it’d have to be one of the giants like Pierce The Veil or A Day To Remember. They’re both bands we’ve listened to for years, and they look like they know how to have a good time.

Where does the inspiration for your music come from?

We get a lot of inspiration from old school emo / post-hardcore bands like From First To Last and Silverstein as well as modern metalcore. I like a catchy chorus so pop-punk is essential in my ITunes library.

Now the EP is released when does your attention turn to working on new material?

New material is already on its way! We’re always writing little bits and over time they just evolve into full songs. We’re hoping to get some new material out early next year.

Do you find writing your lyrics difficult or is it something that comes naturally?

Our first E.P ‘Revise. Reform.’ came fairly easily, as I had a lot to say. But I took a different direction lyrically with “March For The Sun”. I come up with ideas all the time (usually just from singing in the shower), so I’m always making notes.

What are some of your musical guilty pleasures?

I’m don’t really have any that I’m too embarrassed about, but I’m a big fan of The 1975 which usually surprises people.
I know Ricky is a fan of “Nightcore” which is basically metal music that is sped up and pitch-shifted higher. That’s got to be a guilty pleasure, right?

Lastly, where do you see yourselves in a year’s time?

Hopefully we’ll have an album out and ready to take over the world. The dream is to tour the U.S, so hopefully we’ll be closer to making that come true!
