Temples at Electric Brixton

To celebrate the release of their new album, ‘Volcano’, Temples put on a psychedelic rock dream of a show at Brixton’s Electric. This tour sees the band play in the UK and Europe, bringing their 60’s sound to a host of eager ears.

Creatures kicked off the night with a lively half hour of funky music. You didn’t have to know the songs to have a great time/ jump around/ appreciate the frontman’s moves. Their 70’s sound went down well and they did a fantastic job warming up the crowd.

Temples then came on with ‘All Join In’, and the crowd went for it. The energy was insane which was kept up for the next hour and a half, and it was a fantastic song to start the night with. The lighting also played a big part in creating a psychedelic atmosphere, which made the whole night that much more enjoyable.

The setlist itself was perfectly constructed. Songs like ‘Roman God Like Man’ went down brilliantly alongside ‘Colours To Life’. Highlights would have to be ‘Certainty’, ‘Strange or be Forgotten’, ‘Mesmerise’, and ‘Shelter Song’. ‘How Would You Like to Go?’ was one I originally wasn’t the biggest fan of on the album, but live, it was an experience. The droning synth and flood lights behind vocalist James Bashaw owning the stage and commanding the crowd to sing along was phenomenal. It felt like a festival in there.

Occasionally, the sound mixing could have been a little better, because sometimes the vocals were masked beneath the drums. But the crowd didn’t seem to mind, hanging off every lyric, and singing along at the top of their lungs.

The only tiny downside to the show is that the venue had disco balls which remained unused throughout. Aside from that, it was a pretty perfect night.
