Best EX formerly Candy Hearts recently released their new EP ‘Ice Cream Anti-Social’. This is the bands first EP under record label Alcopop Records.

Best Ex are a great throwback to late 90’s to the early 2000’s, the bands previous work under Candy Hearts was much more indie focused, whereas this EP is just straight light hearted pop punk but with some very deep dark undertones in terms of lyrics, almost as if the band want the music to be the antithesis and this if on done on purpose is extremely clever and sets them apart from other pop punk that seem to coming out of the western world these days. Lyrics such as:

  • “my heart is a cellphone (mobile) screen, its crap but I hear it beating”
  • “part of me wants part of you to do the things we should never do, kiss me like you don’t want it to end cos I don’t really care but your girlfiend”
  • “my cat is my best friend, but she doesn’t give a damn about me”

It has a similar sound to previous records but this one has better lyrics by an eon. They may seem oh so very upbeat but they have dark surprising lyrics, I can see ‘Girlfriend‘ and my favourite ‘February 4th’ being a big hit with fans and, you guys aren’t going to care but these are my favourite band of this type of music of which a month ago I would have completely disregarded. I feel I’ve left the quality of the riffs n drums etc at the cost of the lyrics but they are also completely brilliant and I truly cant wait to see what happens with these great guys from across the pond and I hope I get to meet them one day. One last thing, this is far from a girly EP.
