Torres Debuts New Track ‘Cowboy Guilt’

EBUTS NEW TRACK, ‘COWBOY GUILT’ TAKEN FROM FORTHCOMING SECOND ALBUM, SPRINTER, DUE MAY 18TH ON PARTISAN RECORDS

Ahead of the release of her forthcoming second album, Sprinter – due May 18th on Partisan Records (John Grant, Eagulls, Sylvan Esso) – today, Brooklyn-via-Nashville’s Mackenzie Scott, aka TORRES, returns with ‘Cowboy Guilt’. Offering a different side to Sprinter – in contrast to singles ‘Strange Hellos’ and ‘Sprinter’ – ‘Cowboy Guilt’ toys with buoyant, manipulated melodies and cutting guitar interludes that demonstrate a more playful face of the singer-songwriter.

Lyrically, it explores what Uncut describes as “Southern states hedonism”, playing with half-rhymes and evocative, contemplative imagery to stunning effect; painting a picture of the deep South that’s at once grubby and grabbing, realist and whimsical. “You had us in stitches, with your George W. impressions. You sang of reparations with the Native Americans,” Scott chimes during one of the track’s choppiest moments. It’s hard not to be enraptured by her deft turns of phrases: Scott is quickly establishing herself not only as one of the most vivid, dexterous lyricists around, but equally as one of the most gifted songwriters currently operating.
