It’s time to get to know Paul McKenzie, vocalist/guitarist of This Years Ghost! We set Paul 10 questions about his musical taste, likes and guilty pleasures..

How would you describe your taste in music?

Extremely diverse

Who do you consider to be your favourite band and why?

There’s a few staple bands from my musical upbringing, a lot being centred around the early 90’s alternative scenes. Soundgarden really spoke to me growing up though and merged metal and solid singer songwriter styles that influenced me hugely.

Who is the best live artist/ band you’ve ever seen?

So many…. Kiss, Aerosmith, Tool, Stone Temple Pilots….

What is the one song that you could listen to forever?

Yet again so many…… Today I’d chose Sweetness FollowsREM

What album, if any, was a turning point in your ‘musical life’ and why?

Tool, Aenima, it really made me think more deeply about time signatures and more interesting vocal scales

In 3 words, what makes a good album or song?

Connection, power, hook

A festival or gig? Why?

Both have their own charms. A lot of big touring bands only really do festivals these days so it’s a great chance to see them live and for smaller bands to share the bill with them but nothing beats an intimate live show in a smaller club.

Who would be your 3 dream festival headliners?

Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin

Who are the best new band you’ve discovered lately that everyone should know about?

There’s a guy from up north I heard a couple times on the same radio shows as us called Jack that goes by the name of Grumble Bee. He has an amazing EP out.

What band or artist is your secret, or not so secret, guilty pleasure?

Also too many to list, I love Prince (I saw him live 7 times), I listen to a lot of modern pop too. It really helps to have an open mind with regards to genre as it helps with song writing skills more than anything.
