It’s time to get to know Paceshifters‘ Jesper! We set Jesper 10 questions about his musical likes, tastes and guilty pleasures…
How would you describe your taste in music?
I have a very varied taste in music. I grew up listening to a lot of Americana/Roots music which I still like very much, but when I started playing the drums I was more interested in rock, punk and heavier stuff. Bands like Hüsker Dü, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Fugazi and Black Sabbath really got me going!
Who do you consider to be your favourite band and why?
The Replacements. First of all because they have a lot of different styles to offer. They started out as a punk band but on their record ‘Let It Be’ which is my favourite are also a lot of good ballads like ‘Unsatisfied’ and ‘Sixteen Blue’. Secondly I really like Paul Westerberg’s voice because it’s so raspy.
Who is the best live band you’ve ever seen?
That has to be Ryan Adams at the Oosterpoort in Groningen. I saw him play live a couple of times before but this was the best one. His band was just great and Ryan himself was in top shape. The best part was when they played ‘Dirty Rain’. It’s kind of a slow song but they played it really loud!
What is the one song that you could listen to forever?
I think that’s ‘Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill’ by Hüsker Dü. Every verse it just gets louder and louder and more intense. I really like Grant Hart’s songwriting. Too bad he passed away at such a young age.
What album, if any, was a turning point in your ‘musical life’ and why?
The Smashing Pumpkins ‘Siamese Dream’. The sound of the guitars, the way that they play with dynamics. And Matt Chamberlain of course, one of my favourite drummers. The way that they write songs really influenced Paceshifters aswell.
In 3 words, what makes a good album or song?
Groove, Emotion, Guitar Solo’s.
A festival or a gig? Why?
Gig. Because I only like festivals when the weather is good and most of the time shows are more intense at a venue. You can be closer to the band and you can get the feeling that they are playing for you alone.
Who would be your 3 dream festival headliners?
I think that would be Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Spidergawd and Kurt Vile. So if anybody knows a festival where these three bands are playing, let me know! Or maybe we should make it happen ourselves.
Who are the best new band you’ve discovered lately that everyone should know about?
Residual Kid. They are a band from Austin, Texas. We met at South By South West. Really cool guys and they rock, hard!
What band or artist is your secret, or not so secret, guilty pleasure?
There are a lot of Hall & Oates songs that I really like.. But I guess now it’s not a secret anymore HA-HA!
