For those who know Beach Slang, you’ll be familiar with frontman James Alex’s earnest lyrics and the Philadelphia punks fiery shows but now James is switching things up with the formation of Quiet Slang, switching from the raucous punk to minimalism with his vocals being supported by a cello and a piano. Debut Quiet Slang album Everything Matters But No One Is Listening is set for a May 18 release on Big Scary Monsters.

James says of the project; “If Beach Slang is me fawning over The Replacements, QUIET SLANG is me head-over-heels for Stephin Merritt.” 

Lead single Dirty Cigarettes is described by James as “You can be born into damage, into being forgotten. That stuff sticks with you, you know? You sort of just swirl around, looking for something that makes you feel like you might matter. Sometimes you get lucky and that feeling shows up. Other times, it’s tougher. “Dirty Cigarettes” was filmed in an empty church reception hall the day after a wedding—a strange mix of love and loneliness. Something about that felt right.
