They’ve just completed a run of headline dates (check out our review here) and released a new video for One Foot In This Club, we asked MassMatiks to tell us more about themselves by taking on our A-Z challenge!

A song that made you want to make music?

FoalsTwo steps, Twice

The recording makes me want to dance and live makes me want to jump. It is very important to us that the listeners has a reaction to the music.

Best rider you’ve had?

So far we have only had beer and whisky, but were not complaining.

Craziest moment in the band?

Being in this band there are a lot of crazy moments but this one sticks out for me. We played a gig once in this random pub, I had rolled my ankle really badly jumping around and the medics were around me. The the next band went on (who were borrowing the headline bands kit,) and blew the amps. At this point the bands and family starting arguing, like proper raging at each other. I think it ended up in a big fight. I had my own problems to deal with but the boys just sat back and enjoyed the show.

Deepest lyric one of your songs features?

‘big boys don’t cry, they commit suicide’ – Purge Your Mind

The song hasn’t been released yet but is something that plays through my mind every so often.

Easiest song you wrote?

Probably Blank Wall, writing lyrics about internet trolls and people constantly criticising you. Once we have a reason to write or a subject we feel strongly about the song comes much easier.

Favourite song in your set

Our new single ‘One Foot In This Club‘ we haven’t played it live since releasing it yet and the place already kicks off! also independence (a lack of) people love that song and its just a massive party to finish up the set.

Most inspiring musician you’ve experienced?

Me and Joe saw John Mayer recently. The songwriting and skill of the band was jaw dropping.

New band you’d recommend?

Youth Killed It, they’re supporting us for our tour and they’re are awesome! so much character, its really exciting to see.

Opening for this band would be ideal?

Kasabian, their live show is nuts and they seem like sound lads. They’re definitely in a place we aspire to be in.

Place you’d most like to tour?

We have a lot of people around Europe that want to see us, it would be great to go out there and meet them. Also Japan is such a weird place I would love to spend some time out there, it would be a massive culture shock.

Quote you’d like to pass on to our readers?

Sacrifice – Suffer – Success  (Jadi Tention.)

Anyone that really knows me, will hear me say this time and time again. It has completely changed my life and keeps me going. I’m lucky enough to have Jadi come down from America, every year, to teach at my kickboxing club. He is such an inspiring character.

Reason for the title of your forthcoming release?

One Foot In This Club‘ is about the second you step foot into a club and regret it. Everyone has been to these really rubbish, sticky floor over priced places and we always question ourselves. Why do we go to these places, no one even likes them?

See us live at?

11th October at the Hope and Ruin – Brighton

The old days of music were better than the current, do you agree?

I listen to much more current music so will have to go for current music, but it is slowly becoming very bland.

Unusual merchandise?

We acid wash our t shirts and our fans love it. It takes us hours to do but it feels good to have a product that you have worked on, instead of just ordered.

Variations you’d like to do on any of your songs?

Me and Joe do a lot of spoken word versions of our songs. I love doing them because I usually have a lot more to say. It gives people a great insight to who we are and how we feel.

What do your fans mean to you?

It might sound a bit cliche, but everything. When we are playing live and they are in moment with us and after the show when we hang out there isn’t a better feeling, its all just a massive blessing and keeps ups pushing on. Without them I honestly don’t think there would be a MassMatiks and I don’t even think they realise that. We can’t please everybody but we put everything we can into keeping them excited and happy.

X-rays or any treatments needed for band related injuries?

I’ve been hit in the head by Martin’s bass loads and rolled my ankle. Its common for me to have a black eye or a cast on my hand from Kickboxing but so far the Hall of Meat is a small list.

You’re late for a show, whose fault is it?

Donald Trump obviously.

Zoo animal that best describes the personality of your band?

Our song Blank Wall has the lyric ‘No one tells a lion how to hunt.’ I feel were all predators in this band, four very strong characters that when working as a family is unstoppable.
