Furian Take On The A-Z Questionnaire Challenge!

Furian are post-hardcore riff-mesiters from Bradford via Liverpool. The quartet are gearing up to release their brand new single ‘Whats Up’. We have heard it and it is nothing short of epic! Luckily for us (and you once you hear it) we are premiering the track on 19/07/2016. In the meantime, we caught up with the rockers as they took on the A-Z Questionnaire Challenge!

A SONG WHICH MADE YOU WANT TO MAKE MUSIC:

Pretty much everything off Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory.

BEST RIDER YOU HAVE EVER HAD:

Nottingham Tap N’ Tumblr. Pizza, beer and onion rings for every band. He gave us on stage towels to stay dry too. Great guy. Craig’s the man. We didn’t really get any fancy riders yet but that was really kind of him. Nobody asked for it.

CRAZIEST MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED IN THE BAND:

In Holyhead someone tried to sell us cocaine and his girlfriend (seriously), when we were sat in the van. Meanwhile in the pub, where the rest of the guys were, a random stranger got in a fight, got pushed down the stairs and ended up in intensive care. Pretty heavy. Holyhead has no chill.

DEEPEST LYRICS ONE OF YOUR SONGS FEATURES:

‘There’ll come a time, where I won’t have the chance to hide behind your heart and now I know.” First one that springs to mind anyway. That’s from ‘Now I Know’ and it’s about losing your parents some day. The Pacific Ocean wants its deep back.

EASIEST SONG YOU WROTE:

To play? ‘Remember Me’ is probably the easiest one. Big riffs with no major technicalities.

FAVOURITE SONG IN YOUR SET:

We’re releasing a new one called ‘Circles’ soon and we’re playing it in our current tour set. I think all of us love to play that one.

GUEST YOU’D MOST LIKE TO FEATURE ON YOUR RECORD:

Hayley Williams/Jason Butler/Jamie Lenman. Any of those guys would be amazing.

HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING IN A BAND:

It sounds kind of miserable but… probably the fact it’s harder than ever to get people to listen to you with all the internet saturation. Making music isn’t enough to get noticed. We’re the kind of band that loves to keep going for the small victories and making new friends but the hardest thing is probably maintaining the same level of drive and effort to get yourself to higher rungs on the musical ladder. It’s pretty exhausting actually but that’s life. It also costs a lot more money than people probably think, especially if you live all over the UK like we do.

INTERESTING FACT ABOUT ONE OF YOUR MEMBERS:

Technically this is about two band members but… Damien and Strodey both travel over 180 miles each every time we band practice. Commitment.

JOKES YOU HAVE IN THE BAND:

Everytime Abhi asks a stupid question that nobody could possibly know the answer to we shout “50p” at him to put in an imaginary jar. He owes us thousands. We’re also big fans of Brian Badonde from Facejacker and like to have a go ourselves you might say. Bwahhhhh…

KEY TO WRITING A SONG:

I suppose from our personal perspective we’d say don’t overthink it and don’t try to be like anyone else, particularly vocally. Do your own thing and just do what comes out then make it even more bad-ass once you’ve got it down into a well structured format. That’s how we do it anyway.

LONGEST DISTANCE YOU’VE TRAVELLED TO PLAY A SHOW:

So far it’s probably to Salisbury. I think we’re at Brighton on tour this year though!

MOST INSPIRING MUSICIAN YOU’VE EVER EXPERIENCED:

We played/watched a gig in Workington once where the frontman of one of the bands basically just kept saying ‘Yeahhhhhhhh grinderrrrruhhh’ and then walked off stage mid song and started taking pictures of his band saying ‘That’s my band that…’ It was a thing of beauty and really made us all laugh. That guy was so funny.

NEW BAND YOU’D RECOMMEND:

They Say Fall, Lonewolves and Shot Of Hornets. We hope three isn’t cheating.

OPENING FOR THIS BAND WOULD BE IDEAL:

Of Mice and Men, Alexisonfire or Letlive. Tough choice. Fightstar maybe as well.

PLACE YOU’D MOST LIKE TO TOUR:

We’ve talked about Poland and Germany. I think we’d all like to get out there but we’d love to tour most places. It’s always great to visit new places and meet new people.

QUOTE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO PASS ON TO READERS:

‘With great power comes a great electricity bill.’

REASON FOR THE TITLE OF YOUR RECENT/FORTHCOMING RELEASE:

‘What’s Up’ is about a lot of things but mainly deals with the effects of depression and how sometimes you can feel like everyone is asking you what’s wrong but nobody really understands even when you try to tell them. Dan shouts it in the song so it seemed appropriate in a more literal sense too. The video theme involves angels and they live above us from what we hear so that’s another reason for the title. It’s a more than double edged sword thematically.

SEE US LIVE AT:

We’re on tour on the 23rd of July right across the UK. Check out out social media for dates! We’re hitting up Ipswich, Cambridge, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and Liverpool on this run.

THE OLD DAYS OF MUSIC WERE BETTER THAN THOSE CURRENT, DO YOU AGREE:

I think back then more people went to local shows which we wish happened today. In the age of Facebook it seems like less people leave the house because communication has become so easy and you can listen to music online as well. Piracy is definitely a killer for musicians in 2016 too. Buy music everyone. Be part of the good guys! We think it’s worth leaving the house to go watch bands and be a part of the whole experience. Watching a video or listening to the record isn’t ever going to be the same.

UNUSUAL MERCHANDISE:

Most of our merch is pretty standard in terms of format. We have T-shirts, stickers, CDs, badges. You know, the usual. We’ll be the first to admit we should probably get more creative when we can afford to but we do have some cool designs in the store.

VARIATIONS YOU’D LIKE TO DO ON ANY OF YOUR SONGS:

It’d be pretty cool to do a rap mash up of something. Remember me would probably be quite good. We’re down for anything when it comes to mashups. We actually covered some stuff on Youtube in our own way for fun. If anyone wanted to remix our songs in any way we’d love it.

WHAT DO YOUR FANS MEAN TO YOU:

Its weird for us to even think of people who follow us as ‘fans’. We honestly see every single one of them as friends and we know that they’re our blood. We can’t stress enough how appreciative we are of the people that go out of their way to support us and come to our shows and buy our merch. It really is the most incredible thing and very humbling. We’re all about community and having a good time in Furian and it really is a more the merrier kind of deal. Our fans mean everything to us and to see that presence grow is unbelievable.

X-RAYS OR ANY OTHER TREATMENTS NEEDED FOR BAND RELATED INJURIES:

Not so far. Abhi did play a lot of last year’s shows in a neck brace though because he head-banged too much. God that was funny. Our poor fragile bassist.

YOU’RE LATE FOR A SHOW, WHO’S FAULT IS IT:

The direction of the wind obviously. Strodey’s car is very reliant on it.

ZOO ANIMAL THAT BEST DESCRIBES THE PERSONALITY OF YOUR BAND:

Probably an elephant because we make a lot of noise, we are super committed when we decide to do something, we make a point of not making any enemies and treating people with respect and we never forget what people do for us. Also Abhi is Indian and that’s their thing. Nailed it.
