Good Afternoon Castaway! Let’s begin by you telling us who Castaway are and why did you choose your name?

Hey I’m Jay (Vocals), on Guitar and backing vocals we have Reece, 2nd Guitar we have Danny, on Bass we have Matt and on Drums we have Dan! And with our powers combined we are Castaway! We picked our name for the sheer love of Tom Hanks and with the help of IMDB we decided on Castaway! Cause it’s a cracking movie and it sounds cool.

You released ‘Bleak’ in July which we loved here at AltCorner, how was this EP created?

Reece and Matt had been working on some songs for about a year and I was at a party and got talking to Reece and he invited me round to Jam with them one day. From that first day sat in his front room we realised we had something unique that we thought was cool after a month of writing, we decided to push forward with finding other band members. We knew Dan and he was looking to join a band so he was on-board then the last piece of puzzle fell into place when I put Danny’s name forward, I knew he loved music and was a great Guitarist from a previous music endeavor. But once the 5 of us was in a room we just clicked and all wanted to create that we could be proud of.

We had some of the bare bones of songs already in place but when we got into a practice room and wrote them as a full band they took on a life of there own and became something more than I could of imagined, then once we started writing new songs as a band we fount our sound and the direction we wanted to take it.

Vocally I pushed myself to the limits, I never knew my voice could make those sounds! plus with the raw emotion of the songs I wanted the lyrics to match them! I know it’s cliché but Ex’s are always a singing point for me and never being a good enough person the lyric ” I’ve got high expectations and low self esteem ” comes from. But the whole balance of the band is just perfect for us.

In terms of reception of the release and tours you’ve done, how was 2014 for you?

The reaction had been incredible hearing people sing your lyrics back to you is the greatest feeling ever! It’s crazy that people paid to see us , paid for Merch and the EP! I’m a very humble man so that’s just crazy too me! But I’m totally flattered by it. We have played some incredible shows and made a lot of new friends along the way. And what more can anyone ask for than getting to play the music that your passionate about with friends.

What can we expect from you guys in 2015?

2015 will be more Shows , New Songs , A Split EP , our EP number 2 and more Concussions! and just taking Castaway to the next step what ever that maybe.
If you could share a stage with any band dead or alive who would it be?
For me it’s easy either Brand New or Alexisonfire. ( someone make that happen )

What’s your favourite releases of 2014?

Danny – He is Legend ( Heavy Fruit )
Dan – Morrissey ( World Peace Is None of your Business )
Matt – Nothing ( Guilty of Everything )
Reese – Foo Fighters ( Sonic Highway )
Me – The Hotelier ( Home like Noplace is There )
